CHAPTER TEN

You Got Lucky

The next two weeks passed in a blur for Trick. Against Scarlet’s wishes, he went hunting with Bash every night. He tried telling her it was the best way to keep an eye on the faerie king. By the end, Trick was convinced Oberon was safely tucked into Bash’s skin. The hunter hadn’t slipped into Oberon’s personality once. They worked together so well that Trick found himself forgetting he was hunting with the enemy.

And that wasn’t the only new thing.

Faye had gotten over her fear of them. Her curiosity jumped into high gear, leading her to spend all her free time at the mansion. Cowboy and Summer gave up sleeping all day so they could spend time with her. They embraced her like a long-lost friend, and that made Trick wonder about her more than ever. Did the girl have some sort of enchanting power like a siren? Did she have the magical ability to make people into instant friends?

It was Saturday evening, and Faye was spending time with Summer while Matt was at work. That allowed Trick to talk to Cowboy alone. Fortunately, Scarlet had gone home for the weekend. She wanted to spend time with her father, and Trick wanted to experiment with the dollhouse again. So he went in search of Cowboy.

Sitting in a comfy recliner with his feet up in a small room on the second floor, Cowboy grunted as he used the controls to shoot zombies. They jumped out at his on-screen avatar with an intimidating frequency that would give a normal person PTSD if taken too seriously.

“Can we talk?” Trick asked from the doorway.

“Grab a controller,” Cowboy said as he wrenched his to the left while trying to dodge a zombie that sprang from the shadows.

Trick sighed. “Can you pause the game?”

“I can talk and kill at the same time.” Cowboy raised an eyebrow. “Can’t you?”

Left without a viable option Trick sat in the other recliner and picked up the second controller. Cowboy switched to a new game, two players. Since his mind was on other things Trick knew his avatar didn’t stand a chance in the messy post-apocalyptic world.

“What’s on your mind today?” Cowboy asked.

“Isobel,” Trick said. He shot two zombies, but a third got his guy from behind. One life was gone. Another began. If only everything were that simple. “I think she can help us if we get on her good side. She’s been working closely with Jersey. Maybe she knows things about Oberon that we don’t.”

“You talk to her then. She’s not my problem.”

“You were in love with her.”

“Were being the operative word.” Cowboy cursed under his breath as a crowd of zombies jumped his guy. “That little she-wolf stabbed me in the back. I am done with her.”

Trick wanted to argue the point, but he knew where Cowboy was coming from. If anyone knew what it was like to hold a grudge, it was Trick. He had been an angry teen and had lashed out at people who didn’t deserve it like Sean and Laura.
